New crosswalks in Wellington North

WELLINGTON NORTH – Standing in the centre of Arthur’s Smith Street on Sept. 19, Wellington North Mayor Andy Lennox cut the ribbon on a new crosswalk described as the first of its kind in the community.

The crosswalk, located at the intersection of Smith Street (Highway 6) and Conestoga Street, includes an auditory function that reminds pedestrians to wait until traffic has stopped before crossing the busy provincial highway.

The ribbon cutting event also marked the completion of the Smith Street reconstruction project, which involved the rehabilitation of the road surface, curb and sidewalk, accessible sidewalk ramps, replacement and installation of sanitary and water services at select locations, and pavement markings between Conestoga and Wells streets.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Transportation’s Connecting Links program, which supports municipalities in maintaining and improving roads and bridges that connect two ends of a provincial highway through a community.

The crosswalk, located at the corner of Main Street North and Durham Street, is designed to allow pedestrians to cross safely by pressing a button that activates flashing lights to alert drivers to stop and yield.
