WELLINGTON NORTH – The township will cut ribbons for two new crosswalks this September, and residents are invited to celebrate.
“These projects are part of our ongoing commitment to enhance the safety and accessibility of our roads and sidewalks for all users,” stated a township news release.
In celebration of new “pedestrian crossovers” – at Main Street North and Durham Street in Mount Forest and at Smith and Conestoga streets in Arthur – ribbon cutting ceremonies will be held on Sept. 19.
The rain-or-shine events will take place at 11am in Mount Forest and at 11:30am in Arthur, and will be followed by a barbecue at Lions Park.
The crossovers are designed to allow pedestrians to cross by activating flashing lights to alert drivers to stop and yield. They include accessible push buttons and audible signals, and are the first of their kind in Wellington North, the release said.
The Arthur crosswalk is part of the Smith Street reconstruction project, which involved the rehabilitation of the roadway surface, curb and sidewalk, accessible sidewalk ramps, replacement and installation sanitary sewers and water services, and pavement markings.
The project was funded by the Ministry of Transportation’s Connecting Links program, which supports municipalities in maintaining and improving roads and bridges that connect two ends of a provincial highway through a community.
Guests of the Mount Forest ribbon cutting are asked to park along Durham Street in the permitted areas.
In Arthur guests may park in the Lions Park parking lot or along Smith or Conestoga streets in the permitted areas.
