Some residents here are voicing concern about a local business they say is advertising on a number of “adult only” websites.
However, Centre Wellington officials want to gather some facts before deciding what to do, if anything, about the Elora Holistic Spa on Wellington Road 7 on the west side of the village.
Last weekend many residents took to a community Facebook page to suggest the spa, which opened less than a month ago, was an “adult entertainment” business.
None of the accusations appear to be backed up by facts, though some stated the business was advertising on “adult only” websites.
The social media uproar led to the creation of an online petition requesting the township create a bylaw targeting adult entertainment businesses.
As of the morning of March 28, the online petition had garnered 190 signatures.
One of the concerns raised by supporters – provided their accusations are true – is the business’ proximity to both Family and Children’s Services and the Fergus Bounce Indoor Playground, located on the opposite side of Wellington Road 7.
Following the March 27 council meeting, Mayor Kelly Linton stated Centre Wellington’s zoning bylaw does not permit “adult entertainment” establishments.
“I share people’s concern,” said Linton. “We are taking this very seriously and staff were on the phone this morning talking to the people and we are investigating this.”
Linton acknowledged residents’ desire to present a petition to council, but stated there is a process to follow, including registering as a delegation. That means a petition can not be presented until late April, either at committee of the whole or the regular council session.
However, Linton stressed, “It doesn’t matter whether there is a petition or not, we are going to investigate this.”
He added, “Our zoning does not allow any adult entertainment … We have a very clear bylaw. If there is anything infringing on that, all efforts will be made to make sure the township enforces its bylaw.
“As soon as I have anything to confirm, I will make sure the community is aware.”
In a telephone interview with the Advertiser, Elora Holistic Spa owner Helen Moroz stated the business offers treatments for men and women that include relaxation massages, aromatherapy, hot stone massages, scalp massages and foot treatments.
Moroz said it is a commercial business, adding, “We checked the zoning.”
When asked about the accusations made on social media, she said, “I don’t know what you mean by adult entertainment … we do a few different kinds of massages.”
Centre Wellington’s comprehensive zoning bylaw, which Linton said is on the township website, defines an adult entertainment business as any premises that offers “goods, entertainment or services … designed to appeal to erotic or sexual appetites or inclinations.”
That includes businesses offering “body-rubs” performed by unlicensed individuals for reasons other than “medical or therapeutic treatment.”
