New art exhibit coming to Harriston gallery

The Minto Arts Council is hosting the show Comfort/Discomfort, which highlights two versatile and provocative artists from Jan. 5 to 28. The show will be installed in the top floor of the Harriston Public Library.

An artist’s reception will take place on Jan. 7 from 1 to  2:30pm.

Artists Jenny Iserman and Iriz Pääbo use quilts and book art as a medium and signifier to engage with social questions pertaining to violence against women.

Iserman’s current art practice includes equal portions of mixed media, printmaking, quilt making and book art.

A quilt traditionally represents the work of women, separate from books and print, the realm of men. Iserman’s art seeks to address that imbalance, officials state.

Pääbo’s work falls into a constantly shifting, complex art practice that encompasses auteur filmmaking, sculpture, painting, soundscapes, activist art and installation. HA’Aki – her most recent film with the National Film Board of Canada – was the winner of the Ars Electronica Golden Nica award for best computer animation and visual effects in 2009.
