Freedom to Read week in Canada takes place from Feb. 19 – 25. This week is an annual event that encourages us to think about our commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed to us under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Schools and libraries often receive requests from individuals or groups to remove materials that are deemed offensive, including works from famous Canadian authors Margaret Atwood, Lawrence Hill and Alice Munroe. Every request is reviewed carefully, using our collection policy. Our policy states:
“The collections shall be balanced and represent diverse points of view and may include materials that some members of the public consider to be controversial in nature. The presence of an item in the library does not indicate an endorsement of its content.”
Your public library is for everyone, and we have something for everyone. It is our job and our pleasure to provide equitable access to all patrons in Wellington County.
Part of that access, includes access to our free programming! Check out a sample of programming in your area below, and visit www.wellington.ca/LibraryCalendar to register or for more information.
