CENTRE WELLINGTON – Elora firefighters were called to a tractor fire around 6pm on Feb. 17 at a property at Sideroad 5 and Gerrie Road only to discover it was a block heater that had overheated.
“It turned out to be nothing,” said deputy chief Jonathan Karn, adding there was no damage and no injuries.
Dog in the gorge
On Feb. 19 at 5:50pm, both Elora and Fergus stations responded to a call that a dog had fallen into the Elora Gorge.
Karn said the dog had gotten off its leash and fell about 60 feet from the top of the Gorge, and the owner made an attempt to climb down and save the dog, but it turned out to be too icy.
“We were able to retrieve the dog and return it to its owner,” Karn said. “The dog was not injured.”
Karn noted the owner was walking in the Gorge Conservation Area, “which is technically closed right now. No one is supposed to be in there right now and the trails are icy and slippery.”
He urged people to stay well away from the edge of the gorge and to ensure animals are on leash at all times.
Possible house fire
And finally, Fergus and Elora stations responded to a call about a house fire at 152 Povey Road, a new street in the new subdivision off Beatty Line in Fergus.
Karn said homes are under construction on that street and no one is living there.
“Construction workers had a fire going to heat the sand for some brick work,” he said. “The caller saw smoke and called it in.”
Once again, there was no fire or injuries.
“We don’t want to deter people from calling. If you suspect a fire, always phone it in,” Karn added.
“It’s lucky that in all three incidents, there was a happy outcome.”
