Two local MPPs have been given new responsibilities within the Progressive Conservative caucus in a reorganization of opposition critic roles and responsibilities announced on Sept. 30 by PC leader Tim Hudak.
Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece, formerly deputy agriculture critic, is now the party’s rural affairs critic with responsibility for the horse racing industry.
“I’ve always tried to speak up for the people of rural and small-town Ontario, and especially to represent the values and concerns of the people of Perth-Wellington,” said Pettapiece, who became an MPP in the last provincial election in 2011. “That will remain my top priority, but this new role will build on our efforts.”
Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott has been named research and innovation critic, in addition to his existing duties as intergovernmental affairs critic.
“Most observers would see the Research and Innovation Ministry as a key economic portfolio,” Arnott said.
“Today’s innovations can become economic game changers. If we succeed in research and innovation, the economy will benefit, which means more jobs today and for the next generation. It also means more government revenues to pay down the debt and to fund the important programs that we all value.”
In addition to these critic appointments, Arnott, who was first elected in 1990, continues to serve the Legislature as one of the assistant Speakers. He is the First Deputy Chair of the Committee of the Whole House.
