In a letter to GO Transit, Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong has indicated strong support for the proposed Georgetown to Kitchener rail expansion.
Chong cited environmental benefits of such an expansion, saying, “Extending GO Trains to Acton, Guelph, and Kitchener will provide alternatives to the automobile, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions. This supports the obligations we have under the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty of which we remain a signatory, and under which we have obligations.”
Extending GO trains to Acton, Guelph and Kitchener will also assist commuters.
“GO trains will ensure rapid, reliable transportation for commuters,” said Chong, adding, “The rising cost of gas makes it essential that we provide alternatives to the automobile.”
The final reason Chong supports the expanded service is it will assist in the protection of valuable farmlands.
“The rich agricultural heritage of our region, so vital to Halton Region, to Guelph, and Wellington County, is under threat.
“Expanding rail service from Georgetown to Kitchener will allow for the intensification of our communities, so necessary if we are to preserve these vital agricultural lands,” said Chong.
He added, "We’ve got to stop the urban sprawl that has characterized our growth in Southern Ontario over the last 30 years. Extending GO service … will allow for greater intensification and protection of our valuable farmlands. It will also deliver greater environmental and economic benefits.”
