Moyer opposed to plans for township’s tenth anniversary

Next year the township of Guelph-Eramosa will take steps to recognize the municipality’s tenth anniversary, though one councillor may not be in the mood to celebrate.

Reta Moyer told council last week she is not in favour of any proposed plans to recognize the tenth anniversary of amalgamation.

People in former Guelph Township “would not call it a celebration” because they were opposed to amalgamation in the first place, she said.

Mayor Chris White said amalgamation was imposed by the province and had nothing to do with the current council or municipality. Moyer told the mayor she is well aware of how amalgamation works, as she has been through it in other locations.

The rest of council, however, seemed in favour of the proposals from clerk Janice Sheppard, which included:

– altering the township’s crest to recognize the 10 year anniversary;

– purchasing a commemorative chain of office; and

– looking into possible special events to recognize the anniversary.

“I always thought we should have a chain of office,” said councillor Doug Breen.

Sheppard explained the chain would recognize the past municipalities that amalgamated to create the current township, including Guelph, Eramosa, Pilkington, and Nichol townships.

When it came time to make a decision, Moyer called for a recorded vote. She was the only one opposed to the resolution which approved $2,000 in the 2009 budget for the purchase of a chain of office, as well as altering the township’s crest and referring possible celebration events to the heritage committee for discussion.
