Three horses formerly part of the now disbanded Wellington County OPP mounted unit have found new homes.
OPP Staff Sergeant Krista Miller told the Advertiser Moose has found a home on a farm in the county and Jasper and Bosco are expected to be moved to their new home, also in the county, this weekend.
Both Bosco and Jasper have been part of the unit since its creation.
“Our goal was to keep them together,” Miller said of the two being placed on one farm.
The trailer used by the unit to transport the horses will remain the property of the county and a pickup truck also used by the unit remains with the OPP.
Miller said the OPP will retain tack and saddles in case funding is made available to resurrect the unit.
“At this point we’ll be holding onto that,” she said.
County council voted last October to disband the unit as a cost-cutting measure, at the request of the OPP and county police services board. The move also freed up two officers.
The mounted unit operated for 11 years, attending community events such as fall fairs and was used in community street policing.
“It was a good program,” Miller added. “We’re sad to see the horses go, but happy to see those officers back on the front line.”
