Mount Forest Rams Atom girls win consolation championship

It was a record-breaking season for the Mount Forest Rams Atom girls hockey team.

Centres Hailey Farnell (59 goals, 17 assists, 76 points) and Chaise McRobb (42G, 33A, 75Pts) rewrote the Mount Forest Minor Hockey Association’s unofficial Atom girls scoring records.

It’s believed that Addison Fisher had the old mark of 66 points in 2011-12.

But these two nine-year-olds broke that with games to spare, as the team finished the 2013-14 season with the second-best winning percentage in Mount Forest Minor Hockey.

The Rams finished at 29-12-6 for the season and only the peewee boys house team (41-12-5) had a better percentage.

“(It was) an absolute treat being the coach on this team with the plethora of talent available to me and knowing no matter who we played we had a chance to win every game,” said coach Kevin McRobb.

“From dominant defence to (explosive) offense, we grew as a team from the start of the season to the very end and that is a credit to the girls for wanting to win and play hard.”

It wasn’t a two-horse show on offense as wingers Ella Black (25G, 29A, 54P), Chloe Roy (14G, 25A, 39P) and Lexi Rice (9G-11A-20P) led a hard working group of forwards which included Bailey Hodgins, Brianna Armstrong, and Alyssa Aitken.

“(What) I am most proud of is that every girl scored a goal and got on the score sheet and almost every girl doubled their point totals from any other year,” said McRobb.

Jamie Glerum (3G, 11A, 14P) was the leader on a defense that featured Shea-Lynn McLean, Jordyn Storey, Alyssa Varallo and Lexi Walker.

And if the system broke down, goalie Brianna Gordon was there to shut the door. The first-year Atom posted career bests in wins (29), goals against (1.43), and save percentage (.935).

The atom girls won two consolation championships – in Markdale and at the WOAA league tournament in Saugeen Shores – and finished as the silver medalists twice this season (Milverton and Clearview).

“Though we did not win as much as we would have liked we made it to the finals (or consolation final) of almost everything we entered,” said McRobb.

The two exceptions were the Saugeen Shores Silver Stick tournament where the team fell in the tie-breaking formula and the provincials where it found itself in the “pool of death” which featured two of the four semi-finalists.

Next year is shaping up to be another strong season.

The Rams lose just four players for next season: Roy, Glerum, Varallo and Mclean.

That means nine skaters and the goalie are back for what promises to be another exciting season, team officials state.
