Mount Forest Homecoming ahead in 2017

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, Mount Forest residents will have just capped off their 2017 Homecoming reunion.

However Wellington North council here wants a bit more information before finalizing any assistance to the event focusing on years 1879-2017.

Information the township is looking for includes dates, times and locations of events.

Other information it wants includes timing of a proposed street closure for a parade, street dance or other event; details of insurance coverage and any funding requests.

The last reunion was held in 2007.

At that time, council granted permission to the Mount Forest Old Boys’ & Girls’ reunion committee to hold its reunion, waived facility rental fees, approved a temporary road closure to allow for a parade, designated the reunion as a community festival and appointed the members of the reunion committee.

The current committee has submitted a request to council for approval to hold the Mount Forest Homecoming reunion week on June 19 to 25, 2017.

Further it has asked council to proclaim the event as a community festival – for liquor licence applications.

Council reviewed a letter from committee member Rich MacVicar asking for approval to hold the event.

“Our committee has been working diligently to rejuvenate this event as the last one was held in 2007. The first reunion was held in 1906 and it and all other reunions were well received by the town’s people and former citizens, who look forward to coming home.

To put this event together facilities, bands and entertainment need to be booked almost two years in advance, some even more.

There is money left from the last reunion and the committee is asking for approval to host the event once again.

“We would like to note that the year 2017 also signifies Canada’s 150th Birthday,” MacVicar stated.
