At least 15 registered flyers, and possibly the current Canadian champion will be taking part in the Fergus Flying Club competition just outside of town here on Saturday.
Club member Ken Graham said on Monday the show will run from 9am to 4pm and pilots are very welcome to attend and possibly become club members. The competition is open to any model pilot in Ontario. The model planes are radio operated.
Graham said the club will offer a number of competitions for various skills and abilities. Members will be judged by three people who will evaluate everything from take-offs and landings to mandatory air manoeuvres.
Each pilot gets ten points to start, and points are deducted for errors. The one with the most points will win the category.
The planes are from 42 inches wide to 84 inches, and Graham laughed and said, “Go big or go home.”
He said the competition is designed to attract people who might have an interest in the hobby to consider joining the club. Graham added the club recently received a Trillium grant in order to improve its facilities at the farm. He added that the club is consequently getting larger and has about 35 members.
“We’re trying to get the word out that we’re there,” he said. “We’re really taking off – so to speak.”
The event is on Jones Baseline south east of Fergus, at the farm on the east side. The entrance to the field is between fire numbers 6241 and 6245.
