Minto will be taking part in this year’s Green Legacy Day program on April 26.
Council’s decision followed Mark Van Patter’s letter from the program, outlining this year’s plans.
As chairman of the Green Legacy program Van Patter wrote to council in preparation of the local Green Legacy dates for 2008.
“Last spring, all seven local municipalities organized very successful tree days. A total of 35,000 trees were distributed and significant donations were made by the public to local food banks and other worthy causes.”
In anticipation of the 2008 event, Wellington County has reserved 35,000 trees of various species, 5,000 for each local municipality.
“Given last year’s success, I hope that Minto will participate again,” he said.
The dates of April 26, May 3, and 10 were suggested, and councillors picked the earliest of them.
Mayor David Anderson noted the May 3 date is near the time of a municipal conference, while May 10 is the Mother’s Day weekend.
Anderson said that last year’s event was very successful, with all the trees being distributed within a few hours and three to four large blue boxes filled with donations for local food banks.
As council placed its request for 5,000 seedlings, the mayor noted that last year there were numerous requests for a certain species of tree.
He suggested if residents make their wants known early enough, the township might be able to order specific seedlings.
