Minto wins In Motion Challenge – again

The Town of Minto is the winner of the 2013 Wellingon-Dufferin-Guelph In Motion Challenge for the third consecutive year.

Minto residents also got in motion and won a one-on-one challenge issued by the City of Guelph.

Karen Armstrong, In Motion coordinator for Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health, delivered News of the victory to Minto council at its Oct. 15 meeting.

“And I would add it was by a landslide,” she noted.

Minto recreation services manager Matt Lubbers said, “This is the third challenge we’ve participated in and it’s the third one we’ve placed first in. It’s going to be difficult for anybody to unseat us moving forward.”

The Township of Wellington North finished second in the regional competition, which involved residents recording their physical activity online during the competition period. The Township of Puslinch came in third.

The City of Guelph, which was narrowly edged out by Minto in last year’s In Motion competition between municipal council members, took the challenge a step further by challenging Minto to see which municipality’s citizens were most active on a per capita basis.

Guelph finished sixth overall in the competition.

CAO Bill White said he received a message, based on the early results, from City of Guelph councillor Todd Dennis stating, “Congratulations from me and Guelph city council. We are humbled. Cheers.”

Mayor George Bridge boasted, “A thorough thrashing was done.”

Armstrong said, “It was a good challenge. We had lots of feedback.” Plans are already in the works for next year’s challenge, she added.

“People participated in all kinds of activity: running, cycling, walking, hiking, piling wood, couch potato races, etc. – they simply kept moving, which was the goal. Congratulations to all who were in motion,” Armstrong stated.
