Councillors here are looking for provincial and federal money to upgrade the sewage treatment plant in Harriston.
Council made a request endorsing an upgrade to the Harriston sewage treatment facilities under the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component.
Treasurer Gord Duff said it was talked about at the public works committee because the municipality has to pick one project as a priority. Funding is split three ways, between the federal government, the province and the municipality.
The work will include upgrades at the plant, as well as pipes leading into it. If approved, the two-thirds funding would amount to $1.2-million; the municipality would need to come up with the remaining $600,000, with the project starting in late 2009.
Various approvals and an environmental assessment will be needed before work would begin.
Councillor Barb Burrows asked if work is required, does the municipality gets the funding. “No, it doesn’t,” said Duff.
He said certain elements of the project must be done in the short term.
