The Harriston and District Horticultural Society received gardening tips and viewed slides presented by Luke and Crystal Hartung, of Harwill Farms, at its February meeting.
Harwill Farms, a market gardening operation, was established on Minto Line 89 in 2010.
The operation produces 25 different vegetables that are sold at farmers markets from June through September, and also at the farm gate.
The Hartungs do block plantings for family pick-up. They are not certified organic but they do not use commercial pesticides. Green manure and cover crops such as barely and oats keep the weeds down. Many of the plants are started in a greenhouse for transplanting to the garden.
In 2015, the Hartungs plan to use hoop houses to combat pests such as flea beetles, Swede minge and cucumber beetles. They use row covers for broccoli and kale so the beetles don’t strip the leaves. The cucumber beetle attacks the leaves and fruit.
Lynn Collins thanked the guests. President Sue Bridge explained the use of the Think Minto fundraising program sheets. Anyone wanting gift certificates may contact her at 519-323-1642 or any member of the society.
