Milton fires deemed suspicious

Two structures on the same property southeast of Rockwood have been destroyed by fire in the last two weeks.

The fire calls for a property on the Sixth Line of Nassagawaya, about 3km south of the Guelph-Eramosa border (Highway 7), came in the early morning hours of Jan. 16 and 23, said Dave Pratt, deputy fire chief of the Milton Fire Department.

The Jan. 16 fire completely destroyed a two-storey century-old farmhouse and the Jan. 23 fire leveled a new steel drive shed that was about 200 feet from the destroyed house, Pratt explained. No injuries were reported at either fire.

The farmhouse was abandoned and all the windows were boarded up, while the drive shed held minor mechanical items and large round hay bales.

He says the cause of both fires is undetermined.

“Unfortunately because of the amount of damage … you can’t really do a proper investigation because there’s really nothing left,” Pratt said.

“You’ve got two structures that have no utilities to them, no services to them. So I would say they’re undetermined, but obviously both suspicious in nature.”

The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal and the OPP, along with the Halton Regional Police Service and the Milton Fire Department, are investigating.

Over the past four months there have been about 10 suspicious fires in Guelph-Eramosa and neighboring municipalities.

“They’re all being looked at as possibly having relationship to one another,” Pratt said.
