ELORA – The Mermaid in Elora is gearing up to celebrate its 30th anniversary on Dec. 2 from 4 to 8pm.
“It has been a great adventure in a town that has been accepting to us as a couple and a place that has offered the most amazing potential,” said owner Marty Van Vliet.”
Along with partner Mark Anderson, Van Vliet moved to Elora in 1994. They opened the shop soon thereafter.
“At the time the business was moving from an art consignment base to antiques, and I was just starting to work full time as a retail person,” said Van Vliet.
“We opened with little stock and fan fair; I believe the total was about $1,500 retail, and to much pessimism in our location, most people felt it was too far up the hill, away from the hub on Mill Street.”
With the help of Anderson, as well as parents Brenda and Casey, Van Vliet set about growing his business.
The shop was first named Art Nemesis, then Mermaid Antiques, before finally settling into Mermaid in Elora.
For the first few years the couple focused on increasing stock by working in the shop during the day and purchasing stock at auctions or privately at night.
During this time the couple took the initiative to paint the building red and planted flowers in an attempt to draw people up the hill.
“After four or five years I had grown enough to hire a few part-time staff,” said Van Vliet. “The antique business was flourishing at the time, and we had a great selection and fantastic prices so we were busy.”
The business continued to grow until the mid 2000s, when the antique market began to taper off.
“People were living longer, having less kids which meant there was more antiques on the market. Also, young people preferred Ikea,” said van Vliet.
This shift in demand started the transition into the shop that locals know today. Van Vliet began importing products and attending trade shows around the world in search of the most unique and unusual items.
“It was a hit with customers and our business boomed. Every winter we travel to the U.S., Europe and even India to find the things that will excite our customers for the coming year,” said Van Vliet.
“As we grew the town was growing and it is now a powerhouse in the Ontario tourism market. We are so lucky to have moved here in 1994 and grateful to all who have supported us along this journey,” he added.
In celebration of its 30th anniversary, The Mermaid in Elora will be offering discounts from 4 to 8pm on Dec. 2 and will have a few sweet treats for costumers to enjoy, free of charge.
