Melville United Church presents “˜Magnificent Music from the Movies”™

Melville United Church (MUC) is hosting an Open Doors event to welcome the community to a series of events from Sept. 6 to 8.

“This is a weekend to celebrate the community of Fergus, open our doors with welcome, offer a blessing as people return to school and regular fall activities and have some fun,” said Melville Minister Valerie Pitt.

The weekend kicks off with a community engagement fair in the fellowship hall, offering a chance for all groups who are affiliated with MUC or who use its space to share information with the community.

The evening will feature a special concert performance of Magnificent Music from the Movies, presented and performed by pianist Brad Halls, beginning at 7pm.

Halls, a Fergus native with an impressive music, television and stage career, will perform music from some of the great films of the 20th century, with accompanying film images.

Rather than popular songs from movies, this concert will feature selections from the great dramatic musical themes written for movies, as well as anecdotes about the composers and the films in which these pieces are so prominently featured.

The concert will include music from such enduring films from the silent era (Smile composed by no less than Charlie Chaplin for his  film Modern Times) to more contemporary films (themes from The Godfather, Schindler’s List, On Golden Pond and many others).

The concert will feature music by some of the greatest composers in the history of film music, including Max Steiner, Victor Young and John Barry.

On Sept. 8, MUC will offer a celebratory worship at 10:30am.

“We are building our Open Doors celebrations on Sunday around the theme of water.  Water is often used as a symbol for renewal, creation and fresh beginnings – it is also a lot of fun to play with and in,” said MUC youth minister Jen Auger.

“We thought it would be great to lift up and celebrate the past summer time, and also bring a bit of the fun from the summer into our fall celebration.”

Tickets for the Magnificent Music from the Movies performance will be available at the door for $12 or in advance by contacting MUC at 519-787-0570.
