The organizers of the Wellington area Scouts Canada groups invited members of the local media out to Barber Scout Camp here on Sept. 28 for a chance to experience the fun and adventure enjoyed by hundreds of Scouts in Wellington County.
The event included lunch and demonstrations of various scouting activities, such as making popcorn over a fire, building fires, bannock making and archery, plus letting children from various Scout Canada troupes speak of their experiences.
Leading the introductions was David Millie, youth commissioner with Scouts Canada, who shared stories of his travels and how his affiliation with the organization introduced him to new friends abroad, as well as across the country,
Spencer Kielar, 12, of First Guelph St. James, has been involved in scouting for nine years, the last three as a scout. He spoke about adventures of visiting
Rattlesnake Point in Milton, and how his travels have introduced him to new friends.
“I’m looking forward to Canadian Jamboree in Alberta this summer,” Kielar said.
“I love all the camps I’ve been too. I went to Fort George on the anniversary of the War of 1812. It was the biggest camp I have ever been to.”
Kielar also spoke of a family camping trip with his father where he ran into a scout troupe from St. Mary’s, Ontario. “We’re like one big family,” he said. “I couldn’t have had these experiences without scouting.”
Amy Conley of 9th Guelph Venturers said of her group, “There is more freedom because the Adventurers plan their own events, and their own camps.”
Conley is also excited to travel to the Canadian Jamboree.
Dean Post, coordinator of communications and public relations for the Wellington area of Scouts Canada said, “Kids in Scouts have fun adventures discovering new things and experiences they wouldn’t have elsewhere.
“Along the way, the kids develop into capable, confident and well-rounded individuals, better prepared for success in the world.”
