Meals on Wheels tries for greater awareness of service

Meals on Wheels has  been operating in Wellington County for many years, but volunteers are hoping a campaign will raise awareness of the service for seniors.

One way to do that is to have the mayor deliver a meal. In Centre Wellington, Acting-Mayor Walter Visser picked up the deliveries for Joanne Ross-Zuj who was unable to attend on March 24.

Visser was delighted to learn his first delivery was to John Carter. He said the two of them had sat on Fergus council for many years, and he knew Carter was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for close to 20 years.

The VON service was being promoted right across Canada with the Mayors for Meals campaign.

“We are excited about our Mayors for Meals campaign,” said Dee Dee Eurig, program coordinator for VON Meals on Wheels.

“We hope to raise awareness of seniors’ nutrition needs in our community.”

Volunteers deliver hot, nourishing meals to people unable to shop or cook. The meals are prepared in government-inspected kitchens under contracts between VON and commercial caterers or institutional kitchens.

While Carter was receiving a meal in Centre Wellington, other people were taking deliveries from the Mayors for Meals campaign in north, centre, and east Wellington County.

The Mayors or their designates delivered meals for one hour.

Anyone with questions about the service can contact Eurig at 519-323-2330, extension 4953, or they can email Deirdre.eurig@von.ca.
