ELORA – Centre Wellington councillor Kirk McElwain issued a notice of motion on April 29 regarding the Badley Bridge in Elora.
He requested that Wellington County “review its planned replacement of Badley Bridge and consider either repair or replacement with a structure more suitable to the ‘small town feel’ and heritage surroundings of Ontario’s Most Beautiful Village.”
Calling the bridge an “iconic gateway” to the village, McElwain’s motion notes 2,000 Centre Wellington citizens have signed a petition asking that the existing bridge be repaired or replaced with a “more suitable” structure.
The Elora BIA has endorsed the petition.
McElwain’s motion also states the most recent rehabilitation estimates far exceed the 50-year lifecycle cost estimate provided to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in 2016.
In his notice of motion McElwain also states the Badley Bridge has cultural heritage value and warrants designation and protection under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The notice of motion is to be discussed by council on May 27.
