May receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Accomplishments of local businesses and service organizations and one outstanding individual, were celebrated at the Minto Business Achievement Awards Dinner on May 8 at Pike Lake Golf Centre.

Recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for long-standing community service was Harriston Food Bank volunteer Bev May.

She founded the food bank, has organized operations from the Harriston United Church since its inception, and recently turned the responsibility over to a newly-formed volunteer committee.

May was also recognized for volunteer service to minor ball and the local agricultural society in Harriston, and numerous other area organizations, dating back more than 30 years.

“When work needs to be done Bev May is always there to lead, motivate and do whatever it takes to ensure the work is done,” said chamber director Glen Hall, who presented the award.

May acknowledged her take-charge nature comes into play whenever she gets involved in a cause.

“It’s my gift to be born a leader and it would be selfish not to share it,” said May.

“A good leader does nothing in an organization without getting support from all of the people behind it.”

She proudly added, “I have been very fortunate to have a supportive family.

“My kids grew up with a life of caring and sharing for others and all of them live that way as well.”

The Harriston Kinsmen Club was recognized with the Harriston Home Hardware Outstanding organization award.

The OSiM Interactive Business Community Involvement Award was earned by BarBill Farms.

Speare Seeds Ltd. and OSiM Interactive shared the Wightman Telecom Business Innovation Award.

New for 2014 was the McLaughlin Financial Group Award recognizing organizers of a major community event. The award went to organizers of the Jeff Davie Memorial 3-Pitch Tournament.
