The Wellington County Museum and Archives is celebrating ancient Egypt during March Break this year.
Each afternoon from March 14 to 18, themed activities, crafts and presentations will take place from 1 to 4pm.
The week highlights the travelling exhibit on display from the Royal Ontario Museum, Egypt: Gift of the Nile, which is in Aboyne until March 27. All programs are appropriate for all ages.
March 14
Drop by for a lesson in make-up and clothing and get an ancient Egyptian look with an on-site face painter. Visitors will have the opportunity to make jewelry based on ancient Egyptian inspirations.
March 15
The museum will indulge in food and farming, taste the range of food options grown on the Delta of the Nile and help make some Egyptian classics like hummus and flat breads.
Plant some melons to grow a garden later in the year.
March 16
The museum is all about competition as it partakes in an afternoon of gaming – ancient Egypt style. Participants can learn classic games like senet, nine men’s morris, alquerque and wari, games of strategy and skill. Make a version to take home and challenge friends and family.
March 17
Participants are encouraged to get in touch with their artistic side, as the museum focuses on Egyptian hieroglyphics and art. Guest Egyptologist Daniel Kolos will give a presentation on the subject at 2pm in Aboyne Hall. Make a cartouche and create an art piece inspired by the ancient tombs.
March 18
The museum will finish with mummies and archaeology. Former WCMA summer staff member Sarah Warner-Reyes will give a presentation on her time working on archaeological digs in Jordan. Warner-Reyes will present at 1:30 and 3pm. There will be a hands-on activities, crafts and a scavenger hunt as well.
