Mapleton provide 50/50 funding to assist Drayton Minor Soccer

MAPLETON – Council here has approved a contribution of $2,700 from  the Township’s 50/50 fund to help Drayton Minor Soccer (DMS) purchase equipment for local players and referees.

DMS executive member Cori Claus told council on May 9  the organization has recently experienced increased enrollment at all age levels.

“As a result, we’ve had to create two new fields that need equipment such as goals, nets, corner flags,” the group stated in a presentation to council.

“In addition, some of our existing equipment needs to be replaced.  One set of nets is being manufactured locally, right here in Mapleton.”

Claus told council the group was “shocked” to learn the cost of purchasing new nets and is “really excited” they were able to have them made locally.

“In addition, this year, we have many new referees. This provides job opportunities to local youth starting at age 12.  We need to purchase uniforms and equipment for them to be outfitted professionally,” said Claus, noting youth referees work games involving younger children, while adult referees are hired for the older age groups.

While the group hasn’t supplied uniforms for the referees in the past, Claus said “we just think having them look more professional will also help them build confidence.

All told the group requires $4,150 for two large nets and two smaller ones for “kiddie kickers” corner flags and $1,250 for referee equipment and uniforms for a total of $5,400.

Council passed a resolution authorizing provision of $2,700 to Drayton Minor Soccer from the 50/50 funding pool.

“Since this is the last of the money, if anyone else wanted to come before the end of the year, then we just say it’s gone, that’s it there’s no more money in the 5050 for 2023?” asked councillor Marlene Ottens.

“Well, we’ve used up the funds that council puts aside every year. But council always has the option of making changes if something was to come up,” said Mayor Gregg Davidson.

“I always like to keep the door open. You never know what might come our way,” the mayor added.
