The value of buildings constructed throughout the township is down about $4-million this year, but Mayor John Green said Mapleton is better off than most municipalities.
Considering totals as of Nov. 30, Green said the value of construction for 2009 ($23,876,298) is about 85% of last year’s total ($27,841,500), which is “very good” considering the state of the economy.
The number of permits issued this year (309) is almost identical to the figure for 2008 (316) and the November total for both years was 17.
About $208,000 in fees was generated in 2009, which is very similar to the 2008 figure of about $214,700. The fees for November alone were $7,359 this year and $10,572 in 2008.
The value of construction in November was $753,000 this year and $1.13-million in 2008.
Chief Building Official Jim Baker acknowledged the similarities in the 2008 and 2009 figures but said lately there “does seem to be a decrease” in planning activity.
“We’ll see what next year brings,” Baker said.
