Council here is backing a call for the establishment of a province-wide strategy to deal with management of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).
The City of Peterborough is asking the federal and provincial governments to look at the issue and passed a resolution calling for a province-wide strategy, which Mapleton council endorsed on June 11.
Peterborough created its own municipal management plan and allocated $173,000 from its budget to deal with the problem.
The EAB is an invasive species of green beetle native to Asia and Eastern Russia which is highly destructive to ash trees wherever it is introduced.
According to the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources, the EAB was first detected in Canada in 2002 in Windsor and has continued to spread throughout the province.
The area infested by the ash borer is expected to continue to expand, mostly through human movement of infested material such as firewood, the ministry states.
