Man seriously injured in car-freight truck collision near Clifford

One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a freight truck carrying molasses collided with a car here.

On July 22 at about 5:17am, emergency crews responded to the collision on Highway 9 in Carrick Township, northwest of Clifford.

South Bruce OPP officials say a Volkswagen Golf, which was southbound on Highway 9, entered the north bound lane into the path of the freight truck.

"In an effort to avoid a serious head on collision, the truck, which was carrying 20,000 litres of molasses, entered the ditch and subsequently rolled in a field," police stated in a press release.

About 800 litres of diesel spilled and the Ministry of Environment was notified.  

The driver of the truck, a 43-year-old Woodstock man, was not injured. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 24-year-old Toronto man, was transported to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 9 was closed for several hours between Sideroads 45 and 50 remains for the investigative and cleanup.
