Major fire at gas station

OSPRINGE – Fire destroyed a gargage, store, and home here on Oct. 20. Erin Fire Chief Dan Callaghan said a passing trucker saw smoke and called. The value of the buildings was estimated at $1.4-million. He said there were 50 fire fighters at the blaze and some of them remained on the scene until late the next afternoon. The department was able to save the gasoline and propane tanks but much of the property was destroyed.

There was no one at home when the blaze broke out, and no one was injured. The businesses were run by Tony and Sue Takhar, Callaghan said. He noted that fire departments from Erin, Hillsburgh, Rockwood, and a truck from Guelph Fire attended the scene to help extinguish the blaze.
