Maintenance should increase well capacity

Public Works Manager Gary Williamson has told Wellington North’s water and sewer committee there are issues of capacity  with Well 3 next to the water tower in Mount Forest.

He said further investigation has shown the municipality needs to rehabilitate a nearby well to bring its capacity up to its previous level.

“Production has dropped right off,” said committee chairman John Matusinec.

Williamson added, “It is important for this well to be operating at full capacity since it is the main well with back-up power in case of an emergency.”

In addition, the well is at the site of the Mount Forest water tower.

Williamson said Well Initiatives is to submit its bid to complete the work and the township can decide if it wants to do the rehabilitation this fall or early in the new year.

In addition, IWS (International Water Supply Limited) has completed its tests at Mount Forest Wells 4 and 6 and will submit a report of its findings and a proposal to rehabilitate those two remaining line shaft wells. That work will be planned for 2011.

Councillor Ross Chaulk asked if there is any deadline for the work needed on Well 3.

Williamson said the work might be either this year or next, but as of Monday night’s council session, the municipality is still awaiting an estimate from Well Initiatives.

Williamson added the well pump rate has been adjusted to adapt to the current drop in production.

“It’s operating fine; it’s just that the capacity that should be there isn’t there right now.”

Matusinec said expected a report on the well status to be in shortly.

Williamson believes the quote would be to the municipality by the end of August.
