Magpie’s Bakery permanently closes in Mount Forest

MOUNT FOREST – Maggie Schram, owner and operator of Magpie’s Bakery, announced the business’ official closure on the bakery’s Facebook page on Sept. 4.

“Well you know what they say … all good things must come to an end. And it’s a bittersweet time for me over here – literally and figuratively,” her post began.

The Mount Forest-based bakery was operating out of 181 Main St. S.

Schram’s journey began in 2020 after experiencing a “tremendous amount of loss” in 2019.

She decided it was time to start living the life she wanted for herself and begin spending more time doing things that brought her joy.

Being in her kitchen making food she loved was one of those joyful experiences.

She expanded her bakery  by selling dougnuts, bagels, cookies, scones, cakes and other baked goods.

On several occasions her doughnuts would sell out, forcing Schram to create waitlists for her eager customers.

“This ride has been nothing short of a learning opportunity and a chance to grow as a person,” added Schram.

She explained the decision to shut down “wasn’t an easy one” but it’s a decision that will bring “relief” and “happiness” to her life.

Schram’s bakery dream began to feel “very hopeless and scary,” with the state of the economy causing her to “step out of the way.

“It’s been a very rough road for so many business owners, including myself over the last two and a half years,” she noted.

Many dedicated customers flooded her Facebook post with comments of support and pride.

“I could not be prouder of you for the dream you carried out to fruition, I’m sure you sweetened so many’s lives along the way,” stated supporter Jackie Brown.

Others related to the struggles of growing a small business.

“I have seen more small businesses share this exact sentiment and it is truly so sad,” customer Joanne Wiersma commented.

Schram further explained her decision to close stating, “when passion runs out it creates a whole other challenge.

“We are now permanently closed. But please find a way to make your life sweet – it’s worth it,” she added.

She thanked her customers for supporting her journey and helping her achieve her dreams.

Schram declined an interview with the Advertiser.
