Councillor Mike Downey quipped that if more of the township’s purchases came in at 34% under budget that would be just fine with him.
He was referring to the municipality’s recent approval of a $26,223 quote for a new guardrail on Sideroad 17 adjacent to the Conestogo River, in Glen Allan.
The bid, from Town and Country Fencing, in Ariss, was the lowest of two received; the other was for $31,905 from Jay Fencing Ltd., in Waterloo.
“There is a significant 90 degree bend in the road at the bottom of a down grade as Sideroad 17 enters Glen Allan,” Public Works Director Larry Lynch said in his report to council.
He added the 110-metre guardrail should help address what he called the “potential safety issue” along Sideroad 17.
“This area has significant spring flooding where the river rises right up to the travelled portion of the road,” Lynch said.
“There has never been a guardrail installed here, but there have been concerns raised that one should be.”
Council had approved $40,000 for the purchase of the guardrail in the 2009 budget.
