Long weekend farm style

This Victoria Day weekend will go down in history (on the farm at least) as one of the most productive long weekends on record.

As others battled traffic, we strolled out to the hangar and jumped on numerous pieces of equipment. Hours were spent mowing grass, working up the garden, planting the front hay field, trimming, mulching, seeding, picking up last minute supplies and just enough time was left on two days for a brief afternoon nap.

It was a perfect weekend.

While it may not sound like fun for everyone, it was just the kind of break we needed. Too much office and not enough manual labour has a way of softening a guy up. Although a big weekend doesn’t make up for months of reclining waiting for spring, it felt good to work hard for a change.

The weather cooperated, which isn’t always something that can be counted on for the May 24 weekend. We are heading into a busy travel season between Newspaper conferences and print shows. Soon we leave for Edmonton and prior to departing for Germany, we have a one-day layover here to catch up on the garden and grass.  No question time away will require another big weekend to get back on track.

Like most other busy people these are the challenges we choose. Living on a farm and watching nature unfold by the hour is holiday enough for us.

At one point all the engines were silent and just the whisper of the wind through the willows could be heard. To our surprise a happy oriole decided to sing songs we hadn’t heard before.

Farm life is good.
