Locals donate $1,000 to Cancer Patient Services

MOUNT FOREST – Three local residents participated in the global “Movember” movement to raise $1,000 for Mount Forest Cancer Patient Services.

Blake Benson, Andrew Kelly and Joe Wettlaufer fundraised throughout November in recognition of men’s health. The Movember movement started in 2003 in support of health projects focused on prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide prevention.

The cheque was accepted by Cancer Patient Services director Brenda Harris on Dec. 23 along with Benson and Kelly.

“We really appreciate the donation and the support from the community,” Harris told the Advertiser.

Cancer Patient Services is a charitable organization that provides transportation and other services to cancer patients in the Mount Forest area free of charge. The organization is operated by volunteers dedicating their time to surrounding community members in need.

“One of the things most people would associate us with is taking cancer patients to their appointments whether it’s in Toronto or Hamilton … we provide the driver and drive them back and forth,” explained Harris.

Volunteer drivers transport patients to cancer treatment centres and doctor appointments in Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Toronto and other smaller centres, including the chemotherapy clinic at Louise Marshall Hospital.

The organization also offers emotional aid to cancer patients through cancer care coordinator Mishele Ecker at the Mount Forest Family Health Team.
