Local teens hoping to bring pumpkins, cheer to Wellington Terrrace residents

ABOYNE – Local 16-year-olds Sabrina O’Krafka and Jillian Tomlin are hoping to bring some Halloween cheer to residents at the Wellington Terrace Long-Term Care Home.

The teens are asking community members to carve or decorate pumpkins and drop them off at the Terrace.

O’Krafka, a Fergus resident, said she was thinking about what she could do to increase community cheer and chose to collect pumpkins because it’s inexpensive, something families can do together and a way to participate in Halloween without trick-or-treating.

Tomlin, an Elora resident, said it is also exciting for Terrace residents.

Community members can donate carved or decorated pumpkins until Oct. 31.

Pumpkins should be placed by the sign at the Wellington Terrace visitor parking lot and as they are dropped off they will be brought into the courtyard for residents’ enjoyment.

O’Krafka and Tomlin will take photos and post them to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter (@cwpumpkins) and, if enough pumpkins are collected, they will hold a contest for best pumpkin in a variety of categories.

After Halloween, the teens will take the pumpkins to the Wellington County Museum and Archives for its annual Pumpkin Walk.
