WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police laid close to 100 charges during their traffic safety blitz over the Civic Holiday August long weekend.
Between July 31 and Aug. 3, Wellington County OPP officers laid 99 charges, including:
– 59 for speeding;
– nine for stunt driving;
– nine for seatbelts; and
– two for impaired driving (alcohol).
“We thank all the motorists who do their part by making the conscious effort to respect and obey all the traffic laws,” stated Wellington County OPP Sgt. Darryl Porterfield, manager of the Traffic Management Unit.
“We will continue to conduct strict enforcement in Wellington County with the goal of making our roads the safest in the province.”
Across Ontario, tragedy struck a number of families who lost loved ones in road, boating and drowning incidents over the long weekend.
OPP officers responded to three separate drownings, while two people died in other boating/paddling incidents, and two died in motor vehicle collisions.
“OPP officers laid numerous charges while targeting drivers who were not in compliance with Ontario’s Move Over law and who engaged in other risky driving behaviours during one of the year’s busiest weekends on Ontario’s roads,” stated an OPP press release.
The OPP laid more than 6,600 traffic-related charges throughout the province between July 31 and Aug. 3.
Among the charges were: close to 4,200 for speeding; more than 120 for stunt driving and racing; and close to 200 for failing to move over a lane for roadside emergency vehicles.
