Local Parkinson’s walk on Sept. 11

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Participants from across Southwestern Ontario will Walk for Parkinson’s on Sept. 11 and 12. Participants will walk to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease.

All funds raised through the walk stay local, supporting programming for over 10,000 people with Parkinson’s Disease, states a press release from Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario (PSSo).

“We had such a great year in 2019 and raised over $460,000” states PSSO CEO Shelley Rivard. “On the heels of a successful year, we had originally set 2020 target to raise $485,000, realizing $267,000. This year so far, we’re sitting around $62,000 and hope to be able to reach $350,000. We know it’s a tough year for everyone – but we want the community to know that the needs of people living with Parkinson’s have not diminished through this time. In fact, they’ve become greater,” explained Rivard.

While its possible to register online and walk on your own, some areas, including Wellington-Dufferin, are offering an in-person walk location.

The 2021 Wellington-Dufferin Walk for Parkinson’s will be held Sept. 11 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus between 10am and 12pm.

To participate in person, simply attend the walk location at a time that works best. Volunteers will be available to assist participants.

A raffle and bottle drive will also be held at the Centre Wellington site.

“Please ensure you are following all local COVID-19 public health regulations to attend including attending with people only in your own household, wearing a mask and practising social distancing,” organizers urge.

Register online at walkforpd.ca or call 1-888-851-7376.

Online registrations and donations are encouraged, but the organizers note they are also able to accept cash and cheque donations.
