WELLINGTON COUNTY – The Wellington Federation of Agriculture (WFA) organized farm tours with elected officials to tour and engage in discussions surrounding the vibrant and diverse agriculture community present in Wellington County on Aug. 1.
The tour showcased a newly-constructed dairy farm with robotic milking and manure handling, an innovative low-cost carbon free grain dryer operation and a goat dairy with an on-farm processing and retail facility.
In attendance were Ontario Minister of Agriculture Lisa Thompson, Perth-Wellington MPP Matt Rae and Wellington Halton-Hills MPP Ted Arnott.
Also in attendance were Wellington County Warden Andy Lennox, several municipal counsellors, and Wellington Federation of Agriculture directors.
“Each stop on the tour demonstrated innovation in Agriculture and the resiliency of farmers to adapt to ever changing times,” states a press release from the federation.
The tour finished out with discussions over lunch at the award-winning Silver Fox Distillery in Arthur.
Attendees received a copy of the newly completed Wellington County Agri-Food System Study that highlights the economic contributions of agriculture within Wellington County.
The study can be found on the WFA’s website at wfofa.on.ca
Officials state participant saw “great value” in the tour and note the WFA plan to organize a similar tour again.
