GUELPH – Students from Guelph Family Martial Arts returned from the Open Martial Arts Championships held Nov. 16 and 17 in Mono with an impressive 10 gold medals.
The event drew athletes from across the province of varying martial art styles.
The students, coached by lifetime local residents and world champions Nathan and Sophie Skoufis, brought home a total of 10 gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.
The results for the weekend matches are as follows.
– Grace Bridges, silver medal in sparring;
– Chris Hordatt, gold in kata, gold in sparring and gold in weapons (35 years and older advanced men) as well as gold in kata and gold in weapons;
– David Opiela, gold in sparring;
– Kent Watso, gold in sparring;
– Vanya Chadha, bronze in sparring;
– Deepali Rajpal, silver in sparring ;
– Meghan McMurtry, gold in sparring; and
– Mike Barker, gold in sparring (35 years and older) and gold in sparring (18 to 34 years old).
This tournament concludes the 2024 season for the team, which plans to be back in action for the 2025 provincial championships.
