Local libraries celebrate Family Literacy Day

WELLINGTON COUNTY – ABC Life Literacy Canada is encouraging Canadians to celebrate Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the initiative, and Wellington County libraries are taking part in the event.

ABC Life Literacy, a non-profit organization, introduced Family Literacy Day in 1999 to “raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family,” according to the organization’s website.

ABC Life Literacy is encouraging families to take 20 minutes out of their day to prioritize learning.

Wellington County libraries want to help families achieve this goal by offering fun and educational activities and crafts at the various branches throughout January.

All Wellington County library branches are distributing Family Literacy bingo sheets until Jan. 31. Those who pick up a bingo sheet and complete at least one line across, down or diagonally will earn a prize.
