Local lacrosse player in the top 25 for Team Canada

Local lacrosse player Dana Dobbie was selected among the top 25 players that will continue to train with Team Canada in preparation for the 2017 FIL (Federation of International Lacrosse) Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.

The team announced the top 25 players on Oct. 19 following a series of exhibition games to evaluate 41 women competing for a spot on the final roster.

Dobbie, a Fergus resident, played for Team Canada’s junior team in 2003 and the senior team in 2009 and 2013.

The staff received 127 tryout applications in late 2015, and of those 79 participated in the team’s first camp at Syracuse University in August. Roughly half were eliminated from contention afterwards, leaving the 41 players that took part in the most recent camp.

The coaching staff will have a few more opportunities to evaluate the roster and implement systems, with training camps scheduled for January and May.

Coaches will need to cut the roster from 25 to 18 in time for this summer’s 2017 FIL Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford, England and 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland.
