Growing up, many kids dream of becoming a firefighter – and now they don’t have to wait.
The Mapleton Fire Department is offering local youths up to grade 5 the chance to become Junior Fire Chief this month.
The local department has been selected as one of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) “Junior Fire Chief” municipal contest participants.
Mapleton Fire Chief Rick Richardson said anyone interested should write a brief letter (two paragraphs) explaining “what fire prevention means” or “why we need smoke alarms and escape plans.”
The letters should be submitted on or before Oct. 16 to the Drayton station (preferably on Saturday between 8:30 and 9am) or the Moorefield station (preferably Saturday between 8:30 and 9:30am).
The department will announce the winner on Oct. 17 at its pancake breakfast at the PMD arena.
Full details about the provincial contest are available at www.juniorfirechief.ca.
