U Sports International announced on Jan. 6 its 122-member delegation for the 2017 Winter Universiade, set for Jan. 29 to Feb. 8 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Mapleton native Brent Pedersen joins the men’s hockey team.
Pedersen played with the Kitchener Rangers from 2011 to 2015 before moving to the Oshawa Generals.
He is currently playing for Laurentian University.
The 21-year-old left winger was drafted for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2013.
The 122 Canadians includes 88 student-athletes and 34 mission and support staff in six Sports – biathlon, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboard, along with men’s and women’s teams hockey and curling.
Canada will begin competition in women’s hockey on Jan. 28.
The men’s hockey team faces off Jan. 30 against USA at 7:30pm local (8:30am ET).
