Local food and agriculture highlighted during Rural Romp

WELLINGTON COUNTY – The ninth annual Spring Rural Romp will be held May 25, giving visitors a taste of local food, an opportunity to experience local agriculture and find the story behind your food.

Eleven locations, including farms, markets, butcher shops, plant nurseries and a bed and breakfast in Mapleton, Minto and Wellington North are welcoming visitors between 10am to 4pm as part of this free, self-guided tour.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet local farmers, visit farm animals, go on wagon rides, participate in activities and purchase seedlings, flowers, plants, spring produce and local foods. Visitors can taste their way through northern Wellington County as many Rural Romp locations will feature food samples including organic ice cream and sheep milk gelato.

Each Rural Romp location invites particpants to “dig a little deeper” and find the answer to a unique treasure hunt question. In addition, visitors are encouraged to take a felfie (farm-selfie) at each location and share the fun via social media using the hashtags #RuralRomp and #tastereal. All felfies and treasure hunt ballots will be entered in a draw to win local food prizes.

Rompers also have the opportunity to participate in the Spring Romp Photo Contest. Prizes will be awarded for the best photo in three different categories: farmscapes, family fun, and food.

This year visitors are invited to stop at Wellington County’s Green Legacy Tree Nursery Open House in Damascus from 9am to 1pm. Visitors can enjoy breakfast before learning to transplant a tree and receive a free sapling.

For more information on the photo contest, or to download your copy of the Rural Romp Guide, visit www.tastereal.ca.

While on the Romp, visitors are encouraged to pick up a Butter Tarts and Buggies brochure – a year-round guide highlighting experiences across Mapleton, Minto, Wellington North and neighbouring townships of Southgate and West Grey.
