Effective speakers – On March 21, the Belwood and District Lions Club hosted the 2023 Effective Speaking Competition for local elementary school students for the first time since 2019. Teachers from J.D. Hogarth, East Garafraxa, St. John Brebeuf and St. Mary Catholic sent candidates from Grades 4 to 8, who “wowed the judges and audience of families and friends with their confidence and poise,” club officials say. In the Junior English category, Liam Ricketts (St. John Brebeuf) won first place and JP Morgan (St. Mary) won second place. In Junior French Ashlyn Wilson (J.D. Hogarth) won first and Sophia Szczepko (J.D. Hogarth) won second. Lucas Smith and Sheetal Dubey, both of East Garafraxa, finished first and second respectively in the Intermediate English category. In Intermediate French, Erin Jimuro and Riley Turner, both of J.D. Hogarth, claimed the top two spots. In the Impromptu Intermediate category, Dubey came first and Turner finished second. “The Belwood Lions hope to be back next year; bigger and better with more schools joining in the event and promoting excellence in public speaking,” officials stated. Ev Robson was on hand to award medallions to the first and second place winners, dedicating a plaque to the memory of her late husband, Wayne Robson, who was a Belwood Lion for over 30 years and organizer of the event’s impromptu competition.
