Last year 19 students from dance schools located in Guelph and the surrounding area were selected by Ballet Jörgen Canada to join the company’s professional cast for the Guelph performances.

“Performance experience such as this is a valuable addition to the education of a dance/performing arts student,” officials say. “Once again, we are delighted to offer the opportunity for local dance students to participate with the professional dancers in the December performances.”

Ballet Jörgen will audition local dance students on Sept. 9 at Centennial CVI in Guelph. Interested young dancers between the ages of 8 and 17 years are asked to register online at the website of Canada’s Ballet Jörgen www.balletjorgencanada.ca.

Students must commit to attend all weekly Sunday rehearsals at Royal City School of Ballet and Jazz.Details of rehearsal schedule yet to be determined.

Students will need to be available throughout both performance days for dress rehearsal with the ballet company and evening performances at 7:30pm

Choreographed by Bengt Jörgen to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s well-loved score, this re-working of the classic is born from a collaboration with Kleinburg’s world-renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

Ballet Jörgen’s The Nutcracker features as a backdrop, Canada’s 20th Century landscape artists Franklin Carmichael’s Church and Houses at Bisset (1931), Tom Thomson’s Snow in the Woods (1916) and L.L. FitzGerald’s Trees and Wildflowers (1922).

Audiences embark on a journey through Canada’s northern lands filled with snowflakes, trilliums and woodland creatures.

Roles such as Deer, Beaver, Frog, Dragonfly, Squirrel and Bear Cub will be filled by young dancers selected during the auditions on Sept. 9.
