Dr. Katrina Kulhay has been working with people’s feet for years, and firmly believes catching problems early is the best policy.
She has been offering a free foot assessment for children every August for 27 years, but last year a mom ruefully told her she had already purchased her child’s back-to-school shoes before getting the assessment.
That caused Dr. Kulhay to back up her free assessments of children’s feet to include July, too. Kulhay operates The Kulhay wellness Clinic and Kulhay Wellness Foot Care in Erin and Toronto. She uses a machine to test people’s feet, and can recommend the best shoes or orthotics for clients to correct foot problems. Youth, in particular, are most able to correct problems if they are caught before reaching adulthood.
The regular price is $50 for the assessment, but Kulhay said kids, in particular, should get problems corrected early – and the free test is a way to do that.
She assesses children’s feet with a computer that monitors the pressure of the feet and takes 40 picture frames per second as a child steps back and forth across it six times.
Sometimes all a child needs is a foot exercise, or as little as a shoe insert to correct future problems with the feet that could eventually lead to foot, hip, knee, and back pain.
Kulhay said the clinic runs Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 8am to 6pm and can also accommodate parents on Saturdays.
