A local artist created a collector’s edition Captain Canuck cover as part of the comic’s 40th anniversary celebration.
Dan Hammond of Fergus was commissioned by the London Comic Con to complete “an exclusive variant Captain Canuck cover for the show.”
There were 600 copies of the collector’s cover of September issue four printed.
Hammond’s Captain Canuck cover features Canada’s original super hero in a pose developed exclusively by the artist.
“It was all my decision,” Hammond said. “And they had to approve it and like it, which they obviously did because it’s on the cover, which is good for me.”
Coming up with an idea wasn’t a problem for Hammond, who’s well aware of the superhero’s story.
“He’s Canada’s one and only super hero, or independent, because there are some that are in Marvel Comics that have been running for a few years, but he was the first,” he said.
As one of the London Comic Con’s featured artists, Hammond was asked to do the cover.
But this was not Hammond’s first artistic endeavor. He has illustrated a novel cover, an album cover, a kid’s book, and an independent comic book – and he is the Wellington Advertiser’s weekly editorial cartoonist.
Hammond also created all of the artwork for the London Comic Con’s website, as well as some promotional material.
His Captain Canuck cover may even lead to more comic opportunities.
“I might be doing another one but for a different comic company,” he said.
When asked if he’d be interested in creating an entire comic book his response was, “Yeah for sure. Oh yeah, of course.”
While there were only 600 copies printed of the limited edition Captain Canuck issue featuring Hammond’s cover, copies are available for purchase at Roxanne’s Reflections Book and Card Shop in Fergus.
