Wildlife is a common site along local roads, but a driver was likely shocked to see a lion cub on the shoulder of Highway 6 here last week.
On May 31 at about 9am, Wellington County OPP responded to the animal complaint on Highway 6.
Police say by the time officers arrived the lion cub was gone.
“Police identified the keepers of the lion and discovered that it had escaped its enclosure near the point last seen,” police stated in a June 1 press release.
OPP officers, including bicycle units, and the owners searched for about an hour and located the cub a short distance from its pen.
Police say the 60-pound cub was unharmed and returned to its enclosure.
“The owner is making arrangements to further protect the young lioness,” police stated.
Exotic pets are not prohibited in Wellington North, but it is always advisable to check with local laws and ensure any pet is managed as necessary to prevent harm to it or others, police stated in the release.
